What You'll Do
Avalara is seeking an entrepreneurial lawyer to support Avalara’s fast-growing, global SaaS business. Avalara’s legal department is looking to add another employment attorney to its client-focused group with a strong emphasis on providing exceptional legal advice and advancing the company’s business goals. This new position, Corporate Counsel, Employment, is responsible for assisting with the management and handling of labour and employment-related matters at Avalara Technologies Private Limited (Avalara, Inc’s India-based subsidiary).
Responsibilities
This position will be based in-person out of our Pune, India, office and have the following key responsibilities with respect to labour and employment law in India:
Advise and assist the India People & Culture (HR) team with a wide range of day-to-day labour and employment-related matters including grievances, performance and disciplinary management, investigations, and other disputes.
Draft and review notices, letters, policies, agreements, and other personnel-related documents.
Review and advise on development and maintenance of employment policies and procedures, primarily those required for compliance with India labour and employment laws.
Support other members of the legal team, outside counsel, and the People & Culture team to develop and revise policies and practices for managing employee-related matters in India.
In performing the job responsibilities, the successful candidate will competently:
Identify and assess legal issues and provide guidance on appropriate action.
Partner cross-functionally with various teams across Avalara such as People & Culture, Finance, Payroll, and IT/Security.
With limited supervision, handle straightforward legal matters and legal questions, as assigned.
Follow through to execution, while recognizing when to elevate certain matters to the attention of their manager or Avalara's General Counsel.
Monitor and research India labour and employment laws and stay up-to-date on new and changing laws and regulations.
Manage India-based outside counsel on employment-related matters.
Understand best practices, what is customary, and what is legally required, and identify practical solutions.

What You'll Need to be Successful
Minimum Qualifications
JD, LLB, or equivalent degree.
Admitted to practice law and in good standing in the jurisdiction in which position is located.
Substantive employment law experience in India which may include internships or externships.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience in counseling SaaS businesses on labour and employment matters.
Experience at a US-based company and collaboration with employment counsel in different regions.
Candidates with an interest in obtaining a deep understanding of Avalara’s SaaS business model is a strong plus.
