We are looking for a dynamic and experienced individual to join our team as the Research Manager, Gender and Media. The successful candidate will play a crucial role in advancing our mission by leading gender-focused research initiatives, and ensuring that our strategies and interventions effectively reach and impact girls and women across India.
You will work closely with BIRD’s Executive team and lead a team of gender researchers and interns from the School of Public Policy, IIT Delhi. You will need to assist in building BIRD’s partnership with both private and government organizations. For example, BIRD is currently scaling SLS on TV in Punjab in coordination with private and state TV networks, the Punjab Development Commission (PDC), and civil society organisations, such as Gram Vaani, Pratham/ASER and Sanjhi Sikhiya.
We expect similar initiatives in other interested states. BIRD is also in discussions with NCERT, the Delhi Education Department and ed-tech non-profits like Rocket Learning, Sesame Street, etc. You will support in building a team in Delhi and other north Indian states.
This role requires extensive travel to research areas and will be based in Delhi. A good fit includes:
5-7 years of experience, preferably in the development sector
A PhD or Masters in Gender or Development Studies, Social Work, Policy or equivalent
Experience working with gender issues in the development sector.
Experience in designing gender-focused research projects, preferably in education.
Strong analytical and writing skills with the ability to interpret data and communicate findings effectively.
Demonstrated understanding of gender dynamics and challenges in the Indian context.
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
Ability to work collaboratively in a diverse and dynamic team environment.
Self-drive, creativity and entrepreneurial energy to get things done.
Fluency in Hindi and English.
Key Responsibilities
Develop and Execute Gender Research Strategy: Design and implement a comprehensive gender research strategy to identify barriers, challenges, and opportunities for enhancing literacy outcomes among girls and women.
Data Collection and Analysis: Conduct in-depth research, surveys, and interviews to gather qualitative and quantitative data on the literacy landscape for girls and women. Analyse data to derive insights that inform evidence-based decision-making.
Program Evaluation: Assess the effectiveness of our literacy programs in addressing gender-specific needs. Provide recommendations for program enhancements and innovations to maximize impact.
Collaboration and Networking: Collaborate with government bodies, NGOs, and other stakeholders to build partnerships and advocate for gender-inclusive literacy policies. Represent the organization in relevant forums and conferences.
Monitoring and Reporting: Develop and implement systems for monitoring and reporting on gender-related metrics and key performance indicators. Provide regular updates to the leadership team on progress and challenges.
Lead, manage and work closely with a team of gender and media researchers.
Research Papers & Op-Eds: Write independently or work with BIRD’s Lead and other team members to co-author research papers and op-eds.
Capacity Building: Work with internal teams and external partners to develop training programs and resources that enhance gender sensitivity and inclusivity in literacy interventions.
Travel: This role will require regular travel and often with short notice for meetings and presentations in Delhi and other places in India.
